Dear Colleagues,

I have served as your president for the past two years and now it is time for another election of officers.  With this issue of the newsletter you will find a postcard that will serve as your ballot.  Please take the time to vote for the slate of officers that the Board of Directors is presenting for your consideration.  We are fortunate to have four very strong candidates who have already worked together on the Board.  Below are short profiles of the candidates so that you may read about them before casting your ballot.  The ballots should be mailed to Mary Upman by May 2nd.

The other outgoing officers, Vice President Fred Schneider and Secretary Mary Upman, join me in thanking you for your support of this AATG Chapter and your continuing contributions to the study of German.

Appreciatively yours,

Janette Patterson, Chapter President

The Board of Directors of the Maryland/DC/NOVA Chapter of  AATG is pleased to present the following slate of officers for two-year terms of office.  If this slate is approved by the chapter membership, these officers will serve from July 1, 2003, through June 30, 2005.

President:   Deborah McGee Mifflin

Deborah earned her B.A. and M.A. in German Language and Literature at Temple University in Philadelphia, including two years of study at the Universität Hamburg. After many years in university administration, she continued her graduate studies at Georgetown University with a concentration in Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition.  She is currently the Language Program Coordinator at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.  She has served on the Board of Directors of this AATG chapter for the past two years.

Vice-President:   Carolyn Ostermann-Healey

Carolyn earned her B.A. in German at Penn State and her M.A. in German at the University of Cincinnati.  She also spent five years studying and working in Salzburg and Vienna. She is currently teaching German at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, VA.  On Saturday mornings she teaches at the German School in Potomac, MD.  She spends her summers teaching at Middlebury College in Vermont.  Last year Carolyn was one of the recipients of the TraiNDaF scholarship from AATG, a leadership program for German teachers.

Secretary:  Haley Crittenden

Haley majored in German and History at Tulane University and spent her junior year at the University of Hamburg, Germany.  She earned her M.A. in Secondary Education at George Mason University.  She also worked for a year at the Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft in Cologne.  She is currently teaching German at Lee High School and Key Middle School in Fairfax County, VA.  She has been trained in the TPRS methodology and has been teaching with TPRS for three years in levels 1 and 2.  Like Carolyn, she received the TraiNDaF leadership training in 2002.

Treasurer:  Shirley Santora

Shirley majored in German and Secondary Education at Westchester State College (now Westchester State University) in Pennsylvania.  She began teaching in Anne Arundel County in 1971 and is now the Chair of the Foreign Language Department at Chesapeake High School.  She has been an involved member of AATG since 1971 and is currently finishing her third term as the treasurer for this AATG chapter.  She has agreed to serve for another term in order to provide continuity for the new slate of officers in the important area of the chapter’s finances.

(Ulrike Schultheis u. Petra Probst, ill.)

Der Ernst des Lebens (Sabine Jörg u. Ingrid Kellner, ill.)

Oh, wie schön ist Panama (Janosch)

Neben mir ist noch Platz (Paul Maar)

Connie - Das Dazwischenkind (Jutta Treiber)

Rennschwein Rudi Rüssel (Uwe Timm)

Opas Engel (Jutta Bauer)
