2003 Annual Report of Chapter Activities

The Maryland Chapter represents over 150 members in the state of Maryland and in the Greater Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area.   The Chapter had a successful year of activities for members teaching German at all levels.  In February, we held our annual Mid-Winter Workshop at Johns Hopkins University and invited Anne Greene from Carnegie Mellon to lead us in the topic ‘Kinder- und Jugendliteratur in the German Classroom’.   Eighteen participants attended this successful hands-on workshop.  Many of us have since incorporated some of the books from the workshop in our curriculum.

In May, along with the German Society of Maryland we co-sponsored the annual Awards Ceremony at the Zion Lutheran Church in Baltimore for high school students completing the AATG National Test at the 85th or higher percentile.  Testing chair, Dorothy Louks, and then-President Janette Patterson organized this outstanding event that was attended by over 200 students, parents, teachers and special guests.

In June, we held elections for new officers and board members, expressed our thanks to the outgoing officers and began the smooth transition for the new slate, thanks to the continuing engagement of so many of our members.

The Chapter started the Fall semester with a September Immersion Weekend held at McDaniel College and co-sponsored by the Goethe Institute.  Ursula Leitzmann conducted the 1 ½ day workshop for 40 participants on the topic of “Typisch Deutsch?! Deutschland und Amerika im interkulturellen Vergleich”.   In conjunction with this event, we held our Fall Board Meeting and annual Awards Banquet to recognize three pillars of things German in our region: Heidi Byrnes, Professor of German at Georgetown University;  Mohamed Esa, Professor of German at McDaniel College; and the German Society of Maryland.

October was a busy month with the 10th Anniversary of German-American Day, an all-day event held at McDaniel College at which over 900 students, teachers and dignitaries attended.   Earlier in the month, chapter members participated in the Maryland Foreign Language Association’s conference by conducting an Immersion Workshop on “Film im Unterricht”, a session on the German community in Namibia and an informational session for members.  Our former president, Mohamed Esa, is the new president of the MFLA and we anticipate a renaissance of participation from our members in this sister organisation.

“Being a member of the AATG gives me a sense of professionalism.  Beyond the personal rewards of information, materials, and the support of colleagues, I have the impetus to grow professionally and then give this back to the organization and thus reach so many more people than I could toiling alone.” Deborah McGee Mifflin
